If you’re planning a holiday to this great city, you’ll be delighted to know that it has more days of sunshine than any other Aussie capital, according to Australia.com. In fact, it has a gorgeous Mediterranean climate, which barely drops below 20 degrees Celsius throughout the year.
Perth at a glance
The WA capital sits along the sparkling banks of the Swan River – named so thanks to its population of gorgeous black swans. Just next to the CBD you’ll find Kings Park, which is the largest inner-city park in the entire world, covering around 400 hectares!
Perth has a population of around 1.8 million people, which is just less than half that of Sydney. However, the Economist Intelligence Unit declared it as the ninth-most liveable city on the globe, ahead of Auckland, New Zealand.
Where to visit on your Perth holiday
There’s no question you’ll find plenty of things to do in the CBD, but if you want to escape the concrete jungle and do some proper Perth sightseeing, you need to jump in a car and start exploring.
Local Perth beaches
Take the opportunity to enjoy a free activity in Perth by visiting one (or more!) of its 19 excellent beaches. Start with City Beach, just 20 or so minutes west of the city centre, then perhaps splash about at Cottesloe a little later on, located just south.
You could also pop in to peruse the weekend markets at Scarborough Beach, 20 minutes northwest of the CBD, or see how you fare against the swells of Sorrento Beach – 25 minutes northwest of the centre.
Animals in the city
Animal lovers should head straight for Caversham Wildlife Park, around 40 minutes north of central Perth. For a single entry fee, you can hand-feed kangaroos, touch a lizard, join an interactive farm show or even get your piccy taken with a fuzzy koala.
Alternatively, an hour south of the CBD (plus a quick ferry ride) will take you to Penguin Island. This is the largest colony of little penguins in WA, with around 1,000 pairs of them in total during winter. The place is bursting with tours, activities and informative talks, so don’t leave Perth without a visit.
Swan Valley wine tasting
Vino connoisseurs will get a kick out of 180-year-old Swan Valley, only 25 minutes northeast of the CBD. There are upward of 20 wine tour operators here, according to the City of Swan website, so you have plenty of choice. Of course, you could also drive yourself to visit the wine cellars best suited to you for that extra bit of freedom. Just remember to designate a driver!
